Melanie lives and works in her local style house on the motu of Maeva, on the island of Huahine, in French Polynesia. Just south of the Equator, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, Huahine is a voluptuous island covered with luxuriant vegetation and colourful flowers, encircled by a lagoon of infinite shades of blues, violets and aquas.

After an initial sojourn in Moorea and Tahiti in 1979, during which her artwork met with great success, Melanie returned to live in Huahine in 1999. During those twenty years she never stopped dreaming of coming back to paint in this exquisite little corner of the planet.

Inspired by her immersion in the Polynesian lifestyle, her paintings reflect the unique world of the south seas—luscious still lifes of tropical fruits on local style calicos, portraits and genre paintings, landscapes and seascapes of sublime beauty.

Various techniques and mediums serve to keep her work fresh and evolving. Her studio space is filled with visual delights running the gamut from printmaking to oil painting, and everything in between–Chinese brush sepia paintings, graphic works in ink, pencil and charcoals, gouache and watercolours, soft and oil pastels, and even a few acrylics.

Her artistic formation began in her earliest childhood, with her mother being an artist and art teacher. Travel and nature were also pursuits her family engaged in, so as a child she discovered not only much of the natural beauty of the United States but also the richness of Europe’s museums, and the exoticism of the Orient. Her family lived for two years in India when Melanie was around 10 years old. She studied Indian Dance, and she was transported by the perfumes and colours of this beguiling country.

She pursued her artistic path quite naturally, intuitively focusing on oil painting as her primary medium. As a child she studied at the Columbus College of Art and Design, in her hometown, and during university spent a year abroad combining study at the École des Beaux Arts of Aix-en-Provence with several private art studios in the region.

In 1976 Melanie earned a degree as Bachelor of Fine Arts from Denison University, in Ohio. Following graduation she traveled extensively, painting and exhibiting in France, Morocco, Samoa, Tahiti, New Caledonia, California, and in the New England region–notably in Boston, Providence and Newport.

During the twenty years she spent in Providence, Rhode Island, she created the “Westminster West Workshop”, classes in painting and drawing. Melanie was one of the first women to sit on the board of the prestigious Providence Art Club, founded in 1840, where she regularly exhibited her work. She is a member of the Taylor Foundation for the Arts, in Paris France, in addition to being a participant in the Salon Nationale des Beaux Arts de Paris.

Her paintings are visible in the finest art galleries of the Society Islands. Every other year she hosts an exhibition of her newer work in Papeete, Tahiti. She is often invited to show her paintings onboard the M/S Paul Gauguin, in hotels and 5 star restaurants, and for artist-in-residence sessions.

Melanie’s studio–“Galerie ’Umatatea”–in Maeva, Huahine, is open to the public. A warm welcome greets all visitors who stop by to have a look…
